OUR APPROACH - ACTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT
As portfolio manager, Paul Dietrich is focused on risk management and the protection of capital from major declines in the stock market. He appreciates that most investors share the same investment objectives—to make money on their investments and not to sustain any significant long-term losses in the process.
The actively managed B. Riley Fairfax Investment Strategies are conservative to moderate strategies designed to:
(1) Stay fully invested in the stock market during the good times of an upwardly trending bull market and an expanding economy, and to
(2) Completely exit the equity markets in the bad times of a long-term recession/bear market by shifting assets to cash, money market funds, U.S. treasury bonds, gold and other defensive investments while downward trending market conditions prevail.
"The best money you will ever make in the stock market, is the money you don't lose in a bear market/recession." - Paul Dietrich, Portfolio Manager
One of the keys to protecting assets from severe market downturns is being able to distinguish between a stock market "correction" and an indication of a long-term "recession or bear market", then to take appropriate action to protect assets. The B. Riley Fairfax strategies apply a disciplined, tactical risk management process that involves careful analysis of leading economic data and indicators. When we believe the markets and economy are trending down to a long-term bear market, our primary concern is the return OF your principal, not just return ON your principal. B. Riley Fairfax strategies are designed to shift client portfolios into cash, U.S. treasury bonds, gold and other defensive investments to protect against extreme losses. During short-term corrections, our goal is to remain invested to participate in future market gains. While there are no guarantees in investing, the value of our tactical risk management process can be seen in the performance track records of these strategies during both up and down markets.
